COMMON REFRIGERATOR / FREEZER PROBLEMS
Not Cooling Properly
This could be caused by a defrost system problem. An evaporator or condenser fan could have gone bad. It could be a bad thermostat or control board. A bad compressor, refrigerant leak, or a restriction would cause a cooling problem as well.
Leaking Water
Although not always, most calls we get that say the refrigerator or freezer is leaking is caused by a stopped up drain line. On occasion this may also be due to a leaking water valve, water line, or high temperatures in the freezer.
Refrigerator Too Cold
If your refrigerator is too cold this could be caused by a bad cold control or a damper motor that will not close. On some systems this could be a bad control board or thermistor. Your refrigerator should not be freezing your food.
Doors Not Closing
This can be caused by bad door hinges. They sometimes get bent or have come loose. Bad door seals can be a problem too. They tear and become deformed. Pay attention to the food or shelves that may be sticking out too far to allow them to shut.
Ice Maker Not Working
If temperature in the freezer is higher than 15 degrees F the ice maker will not activate. It could also be a bad water valve. Sometimes, possibly due to a water valve leak, the fill tube could be frozen up. Many times we find that the ice maker itself is bad.
Loud Noises
We've seen defrost issues causing the evaporator fan blades to hit against the frost that has built up on the coils. A bad damper motor can make noise as well if it's trying to open or close. Ice maker motors can be stuck and continually trying to turn and compressors can be loud if the valves are bad.
COMMON RANGE / OVEN / STOVE PROBLEMS
Oven Not Heating
Bake elements are a common failure causing ovens not to heat. This could also be caused by an electrical issue so check your breaker or fuse box. Control boards or thermostats are also possibilities.
Oven Getting Too Hot
This could be caused by a bake or broil element shorted to ground. Other common causes could be the thermostat, control board, or temperature sensor.
Eyes / Burners Not Working
These are generally caused by bad switches or burned out elements. You could also have a burned up burner block. If the burner block is burned it's best to replace it and the surface element together.
Nothing At All Works
If you've just moved and had to replace the power cord it may be wired wrong. Check your breaker or fuse panel for tripped or blown fuses. The power cord could be bad or the receptacle or receptacle wiring may be burned.
I Smell Gas
If you smell gas it's best to just call 911 and evacuate the house until the problem is repaired. We do not recommend anything else. Call a professional.
Door Will Not Close
Door hinges on ranges and ovens sometimes get bent and have to be replaced. Be sure something is not wedged in between the door and the hinge that would keep it from closing.
COMMON WASHING MACHINE PROBLEMS
Will Not Start
A bad timer or control may be the problem. Be sure there is power going to the unit. Some washing machines may not start if the lid switch or door switch is not working properly. Be sure the door or lid is shut all the way.
Will Not Spin
A bad lid switch or door lock could cause this problem. A broken motor coupler or bad gearcase could also be the problem. If the unit is not draining properly it may not spin. It's also possible you have a bad control board or timer.
Leaking Water
There are many possibilities that could be causing your washer to leak. Hoses, pumps, door seals, water valves, and tub seals should be checked. Overfilling could be caused by a bad pressure switch or stopped up pressure switch tube.
Will Not Drain
We've seen all sorts of problems when it comes to washing machines not draining. This could be a bad drain pump, something in the drain pump or drain hose, a plumbing problem or the drain hose not the right height. You may also have a bad timer or control board.
No Cold / Hot Water
The most likely issue would be a bad water valve. But we've seen water valves stopped up with "gunk" or some kind of "build up". Be sure you have water going to the water valves. We have been on calls where the water was turned off. This could be a control problem or switch as well.
Not Agitating
For basic washing machines agitator dogs are a common problem. Some washers will not agitate if the lid switch or door lock is bad. A clutch or bad washplate is another option. Control boards or timers can cause this as well.
COMMON DRYER PROBLEMS
Not Getting Hot
Most automatically assume it's the heating element that has gone bad. This is a common problem however there are several other parts that may have failed instead. Thermostats, fuses, the timer or the motor would also be some things to check. This could also be an electrical problem getting power to the dryer.
Drum Not Turning
The most common cause of this is a broken belt therefore you should check the belt first. The other most common possibilities would be the motor or timer.
Will Not Start
There are a few different options when trying to determine why a dryer will not start. The door switch is a very common failure. The thermal fuse is also a part that we replace fairly often. Other things to consider are the timer, control, and motor.
Making Loud Noises
It's not uncommon for a dryer to make loud annoying noises when a part is failing. Drum bearing, rollers, pulleys, glides, felt pads and debris in blower wheels are just some of the problems that can make a dryer loud.
Timer Not Advancing
If your timer isn't advancing it's likely a bad timer. However, that isn't the only possible problem. If your timer has an auto - dry cycle you may also have a bad cycling thermostat.
Taking Too Long To Dry
This is something we see quite often. If a dryer is heating but not drying you likely have an air flow issue. This could be a stopped up dryer vent so be sure you have good air flow going to outside of the house. Less likely but still a possibility would be an obstruction at the blower wheel or a stripped blower wheel shaft.
COMMON DISHWASHER PROBLEMS
Will Not Come On
A dishwasher that will not come on could have a bad timer or control board. There is a fuse in many control boards that may have blown. Rarely but some dishwashers we have seen are on a switch therefore you should be sure if there is a switch it is turned on.
Not Cleaning The Dishes
If your dishwasher is not cleaning the dishes you may be loading it wrong. Click on our dishwasher page to read more about that. You may also have a bad spray arm or circulation pump. It's not uncommon to find broken glass and other objects in the circulation pump.
Leaking Water
This is generally caused by a bad cold control or a damper motor that will not close. On some systems this could be a bad control board or thermistor.
Not Drying The Dishes
This can be caused by bad door hinges. They sometimes get bent or have come loose. Bad door seals can be a problem too. They tear and become deformed. Pay attention to the food or shelves that may be sticking out too far to allow them to shut.
Door Not Closing
If temperature in the freezer is higher than 15 degrees F the ice maker will not activate. It could also be a bad water valve. Sometimes, possibly due to a water valve leak, the fill tube could be frozen up. Many times we find that the ice maker itself is bad.
Not Draining
We hear this all the time. If your dishwasher is not draining you may have a bad drain pump or something in the drain pump that is not allowing it to pump the water out. Grease in the drain line is always a mess and will prevent the dishwasher from draining. A control board or timer could also be the culprit.
APPLIANCE MAINTENANCE WE RECOMMEND
Dryer Vent Cleaning
We recommend having your dryer vent cleaned every 2 years. A clogged vent could cause longer than normal dry times therefore you get a higher power bill. And let's not forget what a fire hazard this could be.
Washing Machine Hose Replacement
Most washer hoses should be replaced every 5 years. A burst hose could cause thousands in water damage. The hoses will also start to leak after a period of time.
Refrigerator Coil Cleaning
Cleaning the condenser coils on the back of your refrigerator will help heat escape faster and therefore your cooling system will work more efficiently. Remove the back cover and clean the dust from in and around those coils. If they become too dirty the refrigerator will stop cooling altogether.
Refrigerator Water Filter
Refrigerator water filters should be replaced every 6 months. If the filter becomes too dirty it would decrease water flow through it and take longer to make ice or dispense water.
Dishwasher Maintenance
Dishwashers have vents and filters that need to be cleaned periodically. If these become too bad your dishes will not clean as well as they should or the water will not drain properly.
Dryer Inspection
Not only should dryer vents be cleaned but the inside of your dryer collects a lot of dust and this dust could catch fire. Have your dryer cleaned and check those bearings, rollers, and pulleys while you're in there.
